Malingee, The Ones With Eyes That Smolder Like The Coals Of A Cold Fire

2021.12.03 05:00 LaDeckard Malingee, The Ones With Eyes That Smolder Like The Coals Of A Cold Fire

Cryptids and Cryptozoology have long captivated my older brother Bailey. It began with the classics, Bigfoot, Yeti, Chupacabra, Jersey Devil and Loch Ness Monster, but his casual curiosity quickly developed into a full-time occupation. Bailey knew all there was to know about legendary creatures from all across the planet and I can't say that I blame him.
Our parents died a few years ago, leaving us with a large sum of money and no idea what to do with it. I always simply let him ramble whenever he was enthusiastic about a new wildlife encounter. He showed me a fresh news story earlier this week. In the Australian Outback, a lady was assaulted near a small mining town called Lanstead. As she fled, whatever had attacked her left deep straight slashes over her back and Bailey was quite certain he knew what had triggered it.
He handed me one of his books, which he had opened and pushed it across to me, pointing to a paragraph.
Malingee is an Australian Aboriginal ghost that is nocturnal and malevolent, They prefer to avoid people in but if challenged, they will murder ruthlessly with a stone knife. Malingees have stone knees that scrape together and eyes that smoulder like the coals of a cold fire. Both people and animals dread him since he kills tribesmen with his stone knife at the most simple provocation.
“So, Lewis, do you want to go to Australia?” he inquired, his face beaming. I consented because it wasn't the first time he'd suggested a journey to seek a monster. I got to travel while Bailey pursued his animals. It seemed like a win-win situation to me.
We landed in Australia, rented a car, and drove out into the desert. As we drove farther into the country, the road became harsher, and I became concerned. Our rented car appeared to be in good condition, but we were well out of cell range and if we were to break down, it would be disastrous, or even deadly.
We arrived in the town of Lanstead after several hours. The terrain was strewn with dilapidated wooden structures, several of which were grouped together as though they were preparing for a storm. I brushed my dry fingers together, thinking that it had probably been years since there had been a true rainfall here.
Bailey took out his equipment, which included a long-range listening sonar dish and headphones. He mumbled to himself as he fiddled with the cables. “All the legends say that as they walk, you can hear their stone knees click together. If we can get a hold of that sound...”
We started going across town with his sonar dish set up and headphones on. For the next hour and a half, we didn't hear anything. Bailey’s face brightened up just as he was about to give up.
“Come on, I think I've got something!” he said as he dashed between two abandoned houses. I pursued him down, my focus on rusty nails rather than enraged Aboriginal spirits. But then it occurred to me that I had heard it as well, A faint clicking sound could be heard. When I turned the corner, I saw Bailey looking up at a piece of metal swaying in the wind from a rope, as the wind rushed, the metal banged against the metal frame producing a click.
“Let's get out of here,” he murmured, his tone tinged with disappointment. We returned to the car on foot, but as we got closer, I saw many long thin scrapes crisscrossing the side panel. My thoughts returned to Bailey’s refusal of vehicle insurance and I began to think about what had caused it. Bailey spoke, with his voice low next to me, “Lewis.”
“Yeah,” I replied, attempting to keep my irritation in check. It was at this point that I became aware of the clicking, This time it was louder and closer. I rose up and returned my gaze to the town, where I noticed two dozen pairs of flame eyes peering out from the shadows cast by the houses under the sun.
The clicking began again, this time emanating from each pair of flaming eyes and it seemed they were getting closer. We hopped inside the car, and Bailey started it up. I took a quick glance out the window. Just a few steps away, I noticed a dozen blazing eyeballs were just metres from our car and Bailey put the car in reverse, backing down the road, turning around, and driving away.
I'm at a loss for words as to why we witnessed what we did and I doubt they didn't want us near that town, I believe.

2021.12.03 05:00 Different_Penalty_64 Switching up the actors to different characters storylines

This is kind of random, and not sure if this even makes sense, but Are there any characters or rather storylines that you would have been interested in seeing a different actor tackle?
An example: seeing Barrett (plays Vic) tackle the storyline of Andy and the dead-not dead Mom. I don’t know I randomly came up with that one, but is this idea making sense? Also if you wanted to bring in any storylines from Greys that’s you think would be cool to see one of the S19 actors tackle that would be fun to! Just thought it was a fun idea to think about!
ALSO, I don’t want this to be a place for hating on, judging or comparing how the original actor of a storyline portrayed said storyline! Like I think Jaina KILLED those scenes with Andy’s mother. I just think it’s interesting how each actor can bring a unique take to storylines, and it doesn’t mean that one is better than the other! :)
Maybe this is a bad idea lol, Let me know if you feel like this post comes off as insensitive to the original actors of the storylines! (I obviously don’t mean it to be)

2021.12.03 05:00 dspeyer EA Forum Digest 03 Dec 2021

[German Podcast] A series on the Ethics of Giving and GWWC Today I published the first podcast episode in a series titled "Should I donate and if so, how much?". They are all in German. The podcast, "Gutes Einfach Tun", is aimed at people who are rather unfamiliar with EA. If you aren't new to EA, the episodes might be entertaining, but I doubt you'll learn a lot in the first two parts of this series. If you are rather unfamiliar with moral philosophy, then the third one might be interesting for you (see content below). You can listen to the episode on spotify, apple podcast, google podcast or via anchor.Quick content-overview:In the first episode, I introduce the "great contradiction", that Peter Singer pointed out: many people believe (i) that we should prevent misery and death, if doing so doesn't cause us to sacrifice something of significant moral importance, (ii) that we could save lives merely by refraining from luxuries and (iii) that we don't have any obligations to give money to charity. In the second and third episode, I explore the three ways to resolve this contradiction using both arguments and stories. Specifically, I will tell the stories of Toby Ord and two other GWWC members: Denise Melchin and Felix Werdermann. In the last episode, I'll talk to the moral philosopher Stefan Riedener, who completed his PhD under Hillary Greaves and John Broome about decision-making under moral uncertainty. We talked about - the most prominent ethical theories, - the plausibility of (i) and (iii) in light of these theories, - decision making under moral uncertainty and- obligations to give in light of moral uncertainty I might be biased, but I think this was a pretty cool interview.Release Dates:The second episode will be released next week, the third in the week after that. Feedback is appreciated!

Evidence Action – We’re Shutting Down No Lean Season, Our Seasonal Migration Program: Here’s Why Because of the ongoing Decade Review I am re-posting some classic posts under the review crosspost tag. This post is by Kanika Bahl and originally appeared at the link above on June 6, 2019.
Evidence Action is terminating the No Lean Season program, which was designed to increase household food consumption and income by providing travel subsidies for seasonal migration by poor rural laborers in Bangladesh, and was based on multiple rounds of rigorous research showing positive effects of the intervention. This is an important decision for Evidence Action, and we want to share the rationale behind it. Two factors led to this, including the disappointing 2017 evidence on program performance coupled with operational challenges given a recent termination of the relationship with our local partner due to allegations of financial improprieties. Ultimately, we determined that the opportunity cost for Evidence Action of rebuilding the program is too high relative to other opportunities we have to meet our vision of measurably improving the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Importantly, we are not saying that seasonal migration subsidies do not work or that they lack impact; rather, No Lean Season is unlikely to be among the best strategic opportunities for Evidence Action to achieve our vision.

Philosopher Amanda Askell questions the practice of moral offsetting.
Offsetting is where you compensate for a bad thing by doing a good thing, then consider yourself even. For example, an environmentalist takes a carbon-belching plane flight, then pays to clean up the same amount of carbon she released.

"Believe in yourself" is perhaps the most common trope to be found in self-help books and motivational texts. It appears in fiction (especially children's books), film (especially sports films), and motivational posters. Coaches of sports teams labor to inspire. Low morale is the bane of teams.

I often bump into people who want to do something big, interesting, or important, but who utterly lack the ability to commit themselves to a particular action (often because they lack the ability to convince themselves that something is worth doing).
My suggested remedy comes in three parts. First, become able to feel conviction even in the face of high uncertainty. Second, learn how to weigh your options so hard that by the time you've picked the best available action, no part of you has an urge to go back into "deliberation mode" until you encounter new evidence or ideas that would have changed the result of your deliberation. Third, come to realize that you find good things to do by getting your hands dirty, not by sitting on the sidelines and bemoaning how no task seems worthy of your conviction.

Minding Our Way – Deliberate Once Because of the ongoing Decade Review I am re-posting some classic posts under the review crosspost tag. With their permission, this post may eventually appear under the original author's account. This post is from May 23, 2016.
Here's a question I get asked pretty regularly:
OK, I'm sold on this whole "do the best you can" thing, but how do you actually commit? When I look at my available options, none of them look great. I can take the one that seems best (despite its flaws), but then I keep doubting myself the whole time, and wondering whether there isn't something better I could be doing. For example, I'm currently [doing a PhD|running a startup|earning to give|working at an EA org], and I keep wondering whether I should instead be [switching majors|running a startup|earning to give|working at a different org], and I can't access conviction or resolve. How is it that you actually commit to what you're doing?
